MadLab Day One
Wednesday 12th of June
On Wednesday I was excited to meet Madlab’s Dave Mee, and my fellow placement holder Kathleen for the first time along with David from MIRIAD. We met at Madlab to get an outline of the data-mapping project we would be spending nine days working on together.
So what is the data?
Dave is asking Kathleen and I to look at the data around the different community groups that hold workshops and meetings in Madlab. He wants it collated in way that allows us to draw insights and meaningful findings from the relationships between the data. Dave also talked us through a range of data visualisation tools and useful program’s such as Exhibit, Gephi and D3 which should provide handy when we get going!
Suggested insights were:
Who are the key individuals that keep a group running?
How long have things run for?
What are the groups doing, and is there a connection of themes emerging from this?
What do we expect to do with this data?
Kathleen has a librarianship background so is very comfortable with compiling the data and finding ways to archive and organise this information. I’m keen to look at the insights within the data and find meaningful ways of communicating this, hopefully with some kind of narrative. So the aim is to create something useful and sustainable for MadLab and it’s community to use, and hopefully build on and expand to find new insights as time goes on. I’m looking forward to seeing what we create!
