MadLab Day Two
Wednesday 19th June
What did we do?
Today began with more discussion about the nature of the project and us getting our hands on some more of the data. We had a bit of red herring at the start of the meeting when we became overly focussed on the business angle of the groups and communities. But this was quite quickly addressed and the focus remains upon the nature of the relationships between the groups and individuals in MadLab.
We got a first look at the data today, which allowed us to begin spotting where the gaps are. At the moment we can access a list of the groups meeting at MadLab, and a list of all the events that have happened there. We can’t yet see who is the key member of each group, which groups run which events or how many people attend each group with the information we already have directly.
So, having identified that we do want this information Dave provided Kathleen and I with access to the backend of the MadLab website. This allows us to see who posted what about each group and event which should in turn lead us onto finding out who the key individuals of each group are.
Dave’s vision of the map!
What about all that other data?
Ok, there is a lot of metadata we can also access and a rabbit’s hole of other websites, photographs and twitter feeds we could dive into. For now we are going to seek out those initial connections through the website however. We are conscious that with just nine days to get this done we need to get some bare bones down quite quickly.
However to find out things like the size of the groups we are going to need to ask them. Also to keep things engaging, as this data should be interesting and available to the groups themselves we have started to map them onto the wall of MadLab’s first floor space. Hopefully this will let them know we are here, and when we begin making connections everyone will be able to see and correct us where we go wrong!
So what will we do for next time?
We’ve already set up a project email firstname.lastname@example.org so that Kathleen and I can both communicate with groups and interested parties equally.
We are going to aim to get something a bit more solid to work from for in a couple of weeks, the afternoon of Wednesday the 3rd ideally…
So for this Kathleen is setting up an excel sheet that contains the data we already have, and she’s going to then populate this more info that she can gather from the website.
I’m going to start looking at how we can visually map these connections by making some fake datasets, so we can have a look at how these things may all come together when we next meet.
Kathleen is also developing a quick questionnaire to try and get some of the missing data we need to interact with the groups directly to get. At this stage we know that we will be going in to interact with some of the groups directly, but we agreed to hold off until after our next meeting so we can go in with a clearer view of what we want to learn from them.
It’s probably an idea for me to set up some kind of group Tumblr, but I think this needs mooting with Kathleen, Dave and David as I’m wondering whether as we are submitting this to the Tacit journal whether it will all be compiled there anyway? Just a thought…
So watch this space for some hopefully colourful looking data coming soon!
